Revel in Food and Fun

It is very hard to argue with the claim of The Revel Patio Grill, located on the west side of Preston Road just north of Main Street, that they have the greatest patios in Frisco. We had a couple friends in town recently and wanted to enjoy more than just a dinner out. A dueling piano show in a fun, family atmosphere seemed like the right choice.
When we arrived, we couldn’t help but notice the place’s fun vibe and décor, and instantly thought to ourselves that this would also be a great spot for a date night. The Revel boasts a wide range of entertainment most night of the week, including open-mic nights, tribute bands, trivia contests and karaoke events. The eatery also offers entertainment options for those who aren’t into live acts, including video games, pool and more.

We chose to dine at The Revel on a Thursday evening so we could catch the Dueling Piano Dinner Experience. The ticklers of the ivory take requests during their shows from 5:30-8:30 p.m. While we were there, they performed tunes spanning every genre and decade imaginable.
The Revel’s menu is extensive, and throughout our meal service was quick and friendly. Although we were expecting bar food on the menu, we were surprised to see lots of options including seafood, salads, pizza, steak and more. The Kids’ Menu included typical items from burgers to Mac N Cheese. We also noticed The Revel offers breakfast and brunch items including Chicken and Waffles, Eggs Benedict and a Breakfast Pizza. (We will definitely be back to try the breakfast dishes.)

We ordered a couple of drinks and some Sweet Thai Chili Wings as an appetizer to enjoy while deciding what to order for dinner. The drinks arrived quickly and right behind them were the wings, which were hot and crispy and cooked perfectly. The sauce was exactly as described, with a light, sweet, delicate flavor and just a touch of spice – not too overwhelming for those who don’t like spicy foods. The friendly server gave us a few extra minutes to decide on our entrees since there are so many options on the menu.
Who would go to The Revel and not try the Revel Brisket Burger? Wow! This is one of those items that you’re glad they have a photo of on the menu because it is a beast. The burger consists of a pair of seven-ounce brisket-blend patties – yes, two – pepper jack cheese, smoked pulled pork, jalapeño poppers and a spicy barbecue sauce. I requested seasoned fries instead of the onion rings that usually accompany the burger.

I have to admit that I was a bit scared of this monster! When the burger arrived, we all laughed while trying to figure out how in the heck you’re supposed to eat this thing. Like the old saying goes, “How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.” The first bite of the Revel Brisket Burger exploded with flavor. The jalapeño poppers were perfect – not too spicy, but they added a bright, fresh flavor amid the combination of ground beef, brisket and pulled pork.
My wife stepped out of her comfort zone a bit and tried the Chicken Sandwich, which can be ordered fried, grilled or with Buffalo sauce. She opted for the fried Buffalo-style sandwich with onion rings. The chicken was cooked perfectly. The breading was fantastic – nice and crunchy – and the Buffalo sauce wasn’t necessarily spicy but provided a great tang.
Another great thing on The Revel’s menu is the Country Fried Steak. This hand-battered, traditional Texas meal, with cream gravy, seemed like a must-order. We add some grilled veggies and loaded mashed potatoes on the side.

When this large entree arrived, we had to perform the ultimate test. How exactly does one determine whether a chicken fried steak is great? It’s simple: Can the steak be cut with a fork? Yep! This one passed with flying colors as no knife was needed to cut into this great steak. We all commented on how a great batter for chicken fried steak can be difficult for many kitchens to turn out, but at The Revel they seem to have perfected the recipe.
The final entrée we ordered was a salad, to which our friend chose to add Buffalo Chicken Strips. The salad was exactly what one would expect a salad to be: fresh and perfectly prepared with the right balance of flavors. The sizeable salad is large enough for two to share.

During our meal, the restaurant’s manager stopped by our table to ask how everything was. He shared that The Revel has plans in the works to offer even more family fun with additional outdoor activities behind the restaurant.
If you’re looking for a fun evening – whether it’s a date night or a family night – The Revel Patio Grill is a great place to put on the list. It has the atmosphere you’d want and expect from a laid-back, locally owned, mom-and-pop restaurant with great service and very good food. It is like one of those places where everyone knows your name. We will be back, that’s certain!
