Country Vittles Right Here in Frisco

Here in Texas, we love fried chicken and often take the “art” of preparing, frying and cooking it very seriously. A nearby Dallas dining destination for this staple southern dish has always been Bubba’s Cooks Country, located by Southern Methodist University. Now, Frisco residents will not have to make the long haul to the Park Cities area to enjoy some of the best fried food in North Texas. 

The opening of the Frisco location (which is in the previous location of the Preston Road PDQ) has been highly-anticipated ever since it was announced what would be taking over the space. Offering breakfast, lunch and dinner, Bubba’s Cooks Country is a great place to drive-thru on nights you just cannot bring yourself to stand over the stove cooking or to stop by with the family for a quick meal. 

The restaurant first opened in Dallas based on the idea that, traditionally, southern families are big fans of fried chicken … and everything that usually comes with it! Think Grandma’s homemade fried chicken and sides for days. Owned by the Vineyard family, the family that also opened Dallas/Fort Worth Babe’s Chicken Dinner House locations, the first Bubba’s location was inside a 1929 Texaco service station that was converted into an art deco-style diner. Recipes were based off old family favorites from West Texas. It did not take long for the restaurant to gain many die-hard fans and followers.

As with the original destination, the new location serves up combinations the entire family will love, including dishes like mashed potatoes, fried catfish, chicken-fried steak, green beans, rolls and delicious fried chicken. Bubba’s chicken is always super fresh and comes with the best southern comfort sides with the bold, traditional flavors we know and love.

The atmosphere in the new Frisco location is very casual, but extremely comfortable and inviting. It will immediately remind you of a classic diner, only it has a newer, more elegant vibe. The red booths and chairs pop against the black and white checkerboard floor and old-fashioned sugar-shakers and napkin dispensers add a fun, nostalgic look to the tabletops. White walls are trimmed with black and offer ambiance with the unique lighting. The space is very unique and different from restaurants we are used to around here. The environment immediately offers a great destination for brunch, lunch or dinner.

We were at Bubba’s for Saturday morning breakfast. I saw a few icing-covered cinnamon rolls and fluffy stacks of pancakes in front of several people as we walked to the line to order our food, but I knew immediately that I wanted the Chicken and Waffles. 

We approached the counter and my best friend, Morgan, and I placed our order. Upon looking over the menu, you quickly see it consists of breakfast foods (served from 6:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. every day), main dishes (served from 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day), vegetables, desserts and family packs (served in quart sizes to complete a family meal). We were lucky to arrive around 10:30 a.m., which turned out to be the perfect time, since I wanted breakfast and she wanted lunch! She went a little more traditional with her meal and ordered the Chicken Fried Steak, which comes with two vegetables and two rolls. She decided on mashed potatoes and gravy and green beans for her sides. You cannot go wrong with that!

After ordering, we grabbed our cups, went over to the soda machine to get our drinks and took a seat right in the middle of the main room. It was surprisingly crowded, which actually reassured me that the food was going to live up to its reputation and all the hype.

The Chicken and Waffles I ordered came out and the whole presentation was great! The smell of the food made my stomach growl and mouth water! The dish features chicken tenders that are very tender (as the name would suggest) and moist on top of a large waffle. I covered the plate in syrup, as I am all about savory and sweet flavor combinations. 

The Chicken Fried Steak in all of its golden-brown glory looked amazing from across the table. Morgan said the steak was piping hot and dipped every bite in the gravy. She said the breading was perfect and the mashed potatoes and green beans added the perfect hint of flavor to the main attraction on the plate.

Since we had already failed at starting the day on a healthy note, we decided to splurge and order dessert once we had cleared the plates of the main attraction. We went for a piece of the Apricot Pie to share, which I assure you did not disappoint. It tasted like a pie my grandma would have made. The crust was cooked to flaky perfection and the fruit flavor infused in each bite was outstanding and so sweet. It may go without saying that we left nothing on the plate.

The next time I return to Bubba’s, I may go for dinner. I want to try the fried catfish or chicken and dumplings! Other delicious menu items you should taste test include the breakfast Biscuit Sandwich or the Cobbler, for tradition’s sake. Be still my heart!

Options for families include orders consisting of fried chicken or chicken strips (you choose how much you need) and rolls. This great, quick and convenient dinner option is made easy, especially since there is a drive-thru.
