March 1-July 20, 2008: Born To Play Ball

For Immediate Release Contact: Brian Blake

Born to Play Ball Exhibit Now Open
COLLEGE STATION, TX- Beginning Saturday March 1, 2008, The George Bush Presidential Library and Museum will be the temporary home to the exhibit Born to Play Ball. This exhibit is a cooperative endeavor with the Gerald R. Ford Museum. Born to Play Ball debuts in College Station, Texas, before traveling to Grand Rapids, Michigan later this year. At the core of Born to Play Ball is a list of fifty great players, five at every position, including groups for right and left-handed pitchers, with honorable mentions at every spot. The exhibit will also look at the Negro Leagues, Women’s League, as well as Presidents and their special relationship to this most American game. The players, from all eras after 1900, were selected for a number of reasons: batting statistics, defensive records and other accomplishments. Born to Play Ball represents a love of the game by many of its fans and historians. On display are numerous artifacts, pictures, and memorabilia including: a love letter from Marilyn Monroe to Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle’s tribute Harley Davidson, and the bat used by Ted Williams when he was struck out by Satchel Paige, just to name a few. This exhibit is sure to knock the ball out of the park!
When asked about the new exhibit George Bush commented, “I am so excited that the Museum has chosen baseball as the subject of our next exhibit. It is a game that helped teach me leadership, team work, and perseverance which have served me well throughout my life. I hope visitors will take away a sense of the passion these men and women all share for this most American pastime.”
The Museum at the George Bush Presidential Library hours are Monday – Saturday, 9:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. and Sundays from 12:00 until 5:00 p.m. Museum admission is $7.00 for adults, $6.00 for senior citizens 62+ and active and retired military with ID, $5.00 for groups of 20 or more with advance reservations. Children 6-17 are $3.00; TAMU and Blinn College students as well as children under 6 are free. For more information, be sure to check out our website at http://bushlibrary.tamu.edu
